The making of the village

Founded in 2011, Nature’s Playhouse was established as a sanctuary for parents seeking to connect with their inner wisdom. It is our belief that parents know what is best for their children but many of us get distracted from that inner knowing by techniques, gadgets and ‘expert’ advice. At Nature’s Playhouse, we thrive to support parents and caregivers, by encouraging them to objectively observe their children, engage respectfully, to trust themselves and to find joy in the process. We, including our children, are always doing the best we can with the knowledge and the resources we have at the time.

Re-imaging what it means to have support systems for parents and caregivers by honoring the unique experiences of parenthood, and providing the tools and connection necessary to raise a family.

In addition to the services we offer at our site, we are committed to expanding the broader support network for families throughout Ferndale and Metro Detroit. We are actively involved in community partnerships to broaden the reach of existing services and to create new ones that can be offered either in our space or at other venues in the community. American society often underappreciates the emotional and material needs of new families. We are committed to education and advocacy to ensure that the resources that families need exist and are accessible to them. We envision a world where every family finds their village.

We focus on providing services for families expecting new children and in the first few years of their child’s life. In this important transition for a family, they often need to build- or add to- a new community of additional family members, friends, doctors, nurses, social workers, childcare professionals, and others to create the support system they need. We see our providers, and mixed-use space, as a central part of that support system – what we call a “village.” At Nature’s Playhouse, we strive to connect families to the community through all-natural play and wellness.
